Metropolitan Museum of Art

  Problem
CDI was given the task of helping the distinguished Metropolitan Museum of Art bring a century's worth of art and collectibles into a format suited for the digital demands and stringent standards of the institution.

Assignment

    1. Integrate digital imaging technologies with their traditional photographic and imaging techniques in house.
    2. Deliver a digital photography demonstration for the museum’s executive officers, curators, conservators and production staff to illustrate the power of digital solutions.

CDI brainstormed with Barbara Bridgers, the Met's studio manager, to present a pair of cost-justification analyses for the integration of digital photography for both existing image archives and new three-dimensional object photography.

Finally, with the go-ahead from the museum, CDI and the Met’s studio staff developed a digital imaging workflow solution using several Apple-based technologies, including ColorSync and QuickTime.

Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

  Problem
The museum's goal is to photograph several thousand objects that have been selected to populate the new galleries scheduled to open in 2009. The project has involved much more than establishing capture methods as hardware was only one part of a much larger project scope.

Solution
Initially CDI was brought in to make a survey of the situation, and deliver a plan to move forward. Working with museum management we developed a strategy that focused on establishing consistent image quality and standards-based capture methods.

The museum had traditionally relied on a folder-based file system on a centralized server to store and distribute images. We set out to bring in a best-of-class Digital Asset Management (DAM) system to allow for higher productivity and access control for internal and external users.

As with many digital studios, the staff wasted time on post production, burning CD ROMs, converting color spaces, and making derivatives. One of our criteria for the DAM system was that it needed to include server-based conversions on the fly.

Time Inc Photo Studios

Time Inc ran into a growing problem from the user side of digital imaging, specifically...

The growing fees that photographers have been adding to digital jobs that did not exist in the past with film were beginning to inflate the budgets for editorial photography for the various magazine groups.

While the company had no issue with photographer’s day rates, strange new fees would pop up out of the blue.

Digital tech fees (this is a fancy name for someone that helps a photographer with computer issues and burning cds etc), retouching fees, rental studio fees, as well as computer and digital camera rental fees were all being added to the photographer’s day rate.

Even the rental studios used by photographers began to bill the client for digital equipment and services. The situation in New York City was quickly getting out of control.

The company decided to create a state of the art in-house digital studio facility where staff photographers as well as freelance photographers could work to create editorial photography more effectively.

Time Inc turned to CDI to work with management to design the studio and specify the equipment and entire workflow.

This work involved planning sessions with the various magazine groups in terms of requirements, as well as Information Technology, Design, Marketing, and the architects and construction team.

This was a ground up effort in a large organization, and CDI worked directly with the project manager to steer the project.

Near the completion of the physical space, CDI worked with management to identify and select staff candidates to manage the facility.

From the day the studio launched it has been highly successful. Now a freelance photographer can work directly at the Time Inc studio even if he or she does not own any digital equipment. Since the in house staff maintains the internal workflow and color parameters, the photographers do not require digital techs or costly retouchers.

On any given day, the Time Inc studio is busy with up to three simultaneous shoots at a time. The Time Inc studio has helped it’s magazine groups explore new ideas, and has actually helped the quality and turnaround of images all under one roof.

Assignment

  1. Create a more efficient workflow for increased productivity.
  2. Increase storage space.
  3. Prepare for the switch to Mac OS X.

Sarah Habibi, Director of Graphic Design and Production for H. George Caspari, Inc. had this to say about working with CDI...

"I never felt like CDI is trying to sell us products for their own reasons, or push us to work outside of our budgets. If I need to solve a data storage problem, or find a way to be more efficient, I can make one phone call and know that I'll get the best answers available."
